Ontario County, N.Y. -- A Farmington man is facing attempted murder charges after police say he tried to beat a female co-worker to death.

Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero says Robert Collins, 58, had been stalking the victim for at least two months.

He was waiting for her as she arrived home from work on Thursday night. Collins allegedly beat the victim over the head with the end of a gardening tool.

Police say she fought back and was able to get out of his grasp. She took off running toward Route 96. Collins chased her.

Police say two cars driving by stopped to help the victim, and took her to a nearby car dealership, where they called an ambulance.

The victim was taken to F.F. Thompson Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Collins is being held in the Ontario County Jail.
